Zhao et al. report a non-canonical, excitatory, tonotopically arranged thalamic pathway to NDNF+ interneurons of auditory cortex layer 1 in mice. This pathway,inparallel totheclassicauditory thalamocortical pathway, contributes to processing basic features of auditory stimuli and results in high acuity in tone frequency discrimination.
